Buffalo or Cow? Choosing the Right Dairy Animal for Your Farm

بھینس یا گائے: کون سا جانور بہتر ہے

Pakistan is one of the few countries where buffaloes produce most of the milk. Both buffaloes and cows can be profitable — the right choice depends on your market, feed and management skills.

Milk yield and price

  • Buffaloes typically give fewer litres than good dairy cows, but their milk has much higher fat and solids (fat often around 6–8%).
  • Cows — especially well-managed Sahiwal and crossbreds — can give more litres, with lower fat (often 3.5–4.5%).
  • Many Pakistani consumers prefer buffalo milk, and it usually sells for more per litre. If your buyer pays by fat or total solids, buffalo milk's advantage is even clearer.

Feed

Buffaloes are efficient at using coarse, lower-quality roughage. High-yielding cows need better feed and more concentrate to reach their potential. Where good fodder is scarce, buffaloes may make better use of what is available.

Heat tolerance

  • Buffaloes have dark skin and few sweat glands. They suffer badly in heat unless they can wallow or are cooled with water.
  • Indigenous cows like Sahiwal tolerate heat well. Exotic crossbred cows are much more sensitive and need cooling.

Fertility and breeding

Buffaloes often show silent heat and tend to breed seasonally, which makes long calving intervals common. Cows usually show heat more clearly. Good management narrows the gap, but buffalo breeding needs extra attention.

Disease

Both need vaccination against FMD and HS. Cattle are much more affected by lumpy skin disease and many tick-borne diseases, especially crossbreds.

Costs to compare

Before deciding, write down for each option: the purchase price of good animals, expected daily milk and its sale price, feed cost per day, cooling needs (water for wallowing, fans or sprinklers), and expected calving interval. Comparing income minus feed cost per animal per day usually shows clearly which suits your farm.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose buffaloes if your market pays well for rich milk, roughage is plentiful, and you can provide water for cooling.
  • Choose indigenous cows (such as Sahiwal) for hardiness and steady yields with moderate inputs.
  • Choose crossbred cows only if you can provide high-quality feed, strong health care and cooling.

Many successful farms keep both. Whichever you choose, record each animal's milk and fat so you know which animals — not just which species — actually pay.
