Buffaloes produce the majority of Pakistan's milk, and the Nili-Ravi of the Punjab river valleys is the country's most famous dairy buffalo. Its rich milk earns a premium, but its breeding habits need careful management.

How to identify a Nili-Ravi

  • Black coat, often with white markings on the forehead, face, legs and tail tip.
  • Frequently "wall eyes" (light-coloured, often blue-tinged eyes).
  • Small, tightly curled horns.
  • Large, deep body and well-developed udder.

Milk and fat

  • Good Nili-Ravi buffaloes are commonly reported to produce around 2,000–2,500 litres or more per lactation, with elite animals higher.
  • Milk fat is high, often around 6–7% or more, which raises its value per litre.

The other major breed: Kundhi

The Kundhi of Sindh is hardy, with a compact body and distinctive fish-hook horns, and is valued for good milk under tougher conditions.

Breeding challenges

  • Silent heat is common — check for heat at least three times a day, including early morning.
  • Many buffaloes cycle mainly in the cooler months; summer heat reduces fertility.
  • Calving intervals are often long. Good nutrition after calving, cooling and careful heat detection shorten them.

See our heat detection guide for practical tips.

Feeding a milking buffalo

  • Buffaloes digest coarse roughage well, but high yields still need good green fodder or silage plus a balanced concentrate.
  • Adjust concentrate to milk yield rather than feeding every animal the same amount.
  • Provide mineral mixture and salt daily; mineral deficiency is a common hidden cause of poor fertility.
  • Keep body condition moderate: very thin buffaloes stop cycling, while over-fat dry buffaloes have more calving problems.

Housing and comfort

  • A dry, clean resting area and a non-slippery floor reduce lameness and mastitis.
  • Buffaloes are creatures of routine — keep milking times, feeding times and handlers consistent to support milk let-down.

Summer care

Buffaloes have dark skin and fewer sweat glands, so heat hits them hard. Provide shade, wallowing or water sprinklers, plenty of drinking water and feed in cooler hours.

Calf care

Buffalo calf losses are often high. Make sure every calf receives colostrum in the first hours and is kept clean and dry.

Frequently asked questions

How much milk does a Nili-Ravi buffalo give?

Good animals are commonly reported to produce around 2,000–2,500 litres or more per lactation, depending on feeding and management.

Why does my buffalo not come into heat in summer?

Buffaloes often show silent heat and cycle less in hot weather. Keep them cool, maintain body condition, check three times a day and consult a vet if there is no heat 90 days after calving.
