How to Start a Dairy Farm in Pakistan: A Step-by-Step Plan

پاکستان میں ڈیری فارم کیسے شروع کریں

Many new dairy farms fail in the first two years — not because dairy is unprofitable, but because owners buy animals before they have planned feed, buyers and management. This plan walks through the decisions in the right order.

1. Start with the market

Before buying a single animal, know who will buy your milk and at what price: a collection centre, a processor, shops, or direct to households. Ask how they test and pay (per litre or by fat/SNF) and how reliable their payments are. Direct sales often pay more but need daily delivery and customer service.

2. Plan the feed

Feed is the largest cost. Work out where your fodder will come from all year:

  • How much land you have for fodder, and which summer and winter crops you will grow.
  • How you will cover the lean months (often May–June and November–December) — usually with silage.
  • Where you will buy concentrate and at what price.

3. Choose the right size

Start smaller than you think. A herd of 5–10 good animals managed well teaches you more, and risks less, than 30 animals managed poorly. Expand once your records show a steady profit per animal.

4. Choose the animals

  • Decide between buffaloes, cows or both based on your market (buffalo milk earns more per litre; cows often give more litres).
  • Buy healthy, young animals with records, ideally in early lactation or close to calving.
  • See them milked, check the udder and run a mastitis test. Quarantine new animals before mixing.

5. Build a practical shed

Shade, ventilation, a non-slip floor, drainage, water points, a calving pen and an isolation pen. Simple and well-designed beats expensive and badly ventilated.

6. Staff and routine

Define who milks, who feeds, who cleans and who records. Fixed milking times and clear routines make a big difference to milk yield.

7. Health plan

Arrange a veterinarian before you start, and plan vaccinations, deworming and tick control for the year.

8. Budget and records

Write down your start-up costs (animals, shed, equipment) and monthly running costs (feed, labour, vet, electricity) against expected milk income. From the first day, record milk per animal, breeding, health and every expense. Records tell you early whether the plan is working.
