Knowing the expected calving date lets you dry the animal off on time, prepare her diet, have a clean calving area ready and plan the next breeding. All of it starts from one number: the date she was bred.

Typical gestation lengths

  • Cow: about 283 days (normal range roughly 279–292 days). Heavier breeds and male calves tend to be carried a few days longer.
  • Buffalo: about 310 days (commonly 300–320 days, occasionally longer).
  • Goat and sheep: about 150 days.

Treat the expected date as the middle of a window, not an exact day. Start watching closely about two weeks before.

Pregnancy confirmation

Have a veterinarian confirm pregnancy, usually from about 30–60 days after breeding by ultrasound or rectal examination. Early confirmation means a non-pregnant animal can be rebred without losing another cycle.

Dry-off: about 60 days before calving

A dairy animal needs a dry period of roughly 45–60 days before calving so the udder can regenerate. Shorter dry periods usually mean less milk in the next lactation. Ask your veterinarian about dry-cow therapy to prevent mastitis during this time.

Steaming up: the last 2–3 weeks

In the final weeks, gradually introduce the concentrate she will eat after calving and make sure minerals are balanced. This helps prevent milk fever and supports a strong start to lactation. Avoid over-fattening during the dry period.

Calving

Move her to a clean, dry, quiet area a few days before the due date. Make sure someone checks on her regularly and knows when to call a vet: if strong straining produces no progress for about an hour, or the calf is in an abnormal position.

Planning the next pregnancy

A good target for cows is a calving interval of about 12–13 months. That means getting her pregnant again roughly 80–100 days after calving. Buffaloes typically have longer intervals, and every month you shorten it means more milk and calves over her lifetime.

  1. Record the calving date.
  2. Watch for heat from about day 30.
  3. Breed from about day 50–60 if she is healthy and in good condition.
  4. Confirm pregnancy, then count forward again.
